All About Ms. Austin

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my website! I’m glad you’re here. This website was created to help my students and showcase their awesome work.

I am a teacher at Parsons Elementary School in Suwanee, GA. I’ve taught at Parsons for more than 20 years. During that time, I’ve taught 4th grade, 5th grade, Advanced Content Math, Advanced Content Science, Advanced Content Language Arts, and gifted classes. I’ve been a science specialist who ran the school science lab, and I am currently a computer science specialist who teaches kindergarten through fifth grade computer science specials.

Before teaching at Parsons, I attended Vanderbilt University where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Cognitive Science and Elementary Education. I am also a graduate of Central Gwinnett High School and feel privileged to be able to teach in the district where I grew up.

FAQs

Cats or dogs?

I love both, but I currently have 2 cats named Thor and Loki. I had a dog named Muad ’Dib for 15 years, though, and he was my soul mate.

Favorite Book?

Favorite kids’ book as a kid - A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Favorite kids’ book as an adult - A Beautiful Friendship by David Weber

Favorite Hobby?

I like building computer keyboards, reading and playing video games.

Why do you wear those glasses?

I have a neurological (brain) condition called Visual Snow Syndrome. This means there are little flickers in my vision like static on a screen. I also see bursts of light and images stay in my vision after they should be gone like a visual echo. I also have double vision both vertically and horizontally. This makes it hard for me to see small things and details. My special glasses can’t fix it, but they do help the visual processing center of my brain work a little better. They help me to ignore all the extra junk in my vision.
